New Beachwalk Life Style Development to Stimulate Gentrification of Bali's Popular Kuta Beach.
(8/18/2010) A 5.2 hectare complex incorporating hotels, restaurants, recreational and shopping options is gradually raking shape along a 250 meter long stretch of Kuta Boulevard.
Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort occupies the land once filled by the Sahid Raya Hotel, now demolished to make way for the existing 4-star Harris Resort Kuta-Bali and the new 200-room 5-star Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort. The two properties will be complemented by a high-end retail hub dubbed "beachwalk" featuring over 200 retail and dining outlets.
The Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort, is slated for completion in 2012 and will boast an elegant ballroom to entice the meeting and conference business sector to the area. The existing 191-room Harris Resort Kuta is already in full operation. Developers contend that, together, Sheraton and HARRIS will cater to the needs of two distinct market segments sharing a sub-destination within Bali and operating under the Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort banner.
Teeming with shops and restaurants, the "beachwalk" aims to be a contemporary retail hub, designed to respect Balinese art, culture and the island's traditional way of life. Architecturally, the low-rise facility is said to have been inspired by the gentle contours of rice terraces that still abound in many parts of the island.
The complex will integrate tropically planted open spaces and moving waterways with units of glass retail pods blending seamlessly into the outdoors. Native gardens and child friendly areas for safe play will envelop al fresco dining decks, while a central stage will provide a venue for live performances and special events.
Responding to growing environmental concerns in Bali, the Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort developers are pledging to make a conscious effort to implement eco-friendly ingenuity where open-air walkways cooled by sea breezes will automatically reduce the need for air-conditioning. Built to international standards using locally sourced materials and recycled hardwoods, every effort will be taken to prevent the unnecessary cutting down of trees in the construction of the Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort.
The total investment for the project is put at US$ 70 million and is owned by PT. Indonesian Paradise Island who are working closely with local authorities to re-arrange public pedestrian areas, planting greenery, creating water fountains and ponds.
In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion, Sahid Kuta Lifestyle Resort will feature three pedestrian access points facing the beach and another located at the back of the development, just off Poppies Lane. Two levels of basement parking space will safely accommodate up to 1000 cars and motorbikes making it the largest of its kind on the island of Bali, setting a new standard for Kuta developers in terms of self-contained parking facilities.
"We're trying to bring the drama and excitement to visitors wanting an escape from the hustle and bustle of Kuta where they can relax, shop and feel at ease after a long day," said Hariyadi Sukamdani, the President Director of PT. Indonesian Paradise Island. "At the same time, we don't want to build something at this scale without thinking about the effect on the area and environment, so although it is not yet perfect, we realized it is time that every development in Bali consider this a very important aspect and we want to be part of those who are."
